истПровозглашена в марте 1836 в результате восстания техасских колонистов против мексиканских властей, вошедшего в историю как Техасская революция [ Texas Revolution]. На мартовском конвенте в Техасе была провозглашена независимость от Мексики, которая стала реальностью в октябре после победы при Сан-Хасинто [ San Jacinto, Battle of]. Президентом республики был провозглашен С. Хьюстон [ Houston, Samuel (Sam)]. Основные направления деятельности его первой администрации (1836-38) состояли в попытках установить общую политическую и экономическую стабильность, мир с индейскими племенами, а также добиться признания со стороны США в надежде на немедленную аннексию ими новой республики. В 1838 президента Хьюстона сменил М. Ламар [ Lamar, Mirabeau Buonaparte], настроенный на независимость Техаса и изгнавший с его территории практически всех индейцев.
